==Overview==
The Sony VAIO PCG-F are a series of high-range notebooks released by Sony between February 1999 and November 2000.

One of the best models of the 1999-2000 lineup, they have a 13", 14.1" (rarer), 15" 1024x768 or a 15<nowiki>''</nowiki> 1400x1050 display, with an active or passive matrix.

The PCG-F's case was made of grey and light blue plastic. They were acclaimed upon their release because of their style and portability.[[File:PCG-F180.png|thumb|PCG-F180 from 1999]]

They had one of the most powerful CPUs and GPUs of the market, that made them true replacements to a desktop, a true evolution for those years. In fact, they were shipped with many audio and video editing programs, like Adobe Premiere and Sonic Foundry Sound Forge.

On the other hand, they were very difficult to buy outside the United States and Japan, increasing an already very high price.

The battery quality and duration were very good for those years, even if the notebooks' weight were more than 1kg less than the direct competitors.

They were made for two years, the main difference between those was that the 1999 ones had a Pentium II processor, while the 2000 versions had a Pentium III.

Sony made many variations of it, changing the CPUs' clock speed.
==Overview==
The Sony VAIO PCG-FX is a series of mid-range notebooks manufactured by Sony between February 2001 and November 2002.

They succeeded the [[PCG-F]], borrowing heavily from its design.

They were offered in a 14.1" or 15" form factor, both having XGA TFT displays. A 15-inch SXGA+ panel was available in the higher-end 2002 models.

The PCG-FX is constructed fully out of plastic.

They were acclaimed upon their release because of their style, portability and build quality.[[File:PCG-FX.png|thumb|Product tour from Sony website of the PCG-FX 2001 lineup]]

On the other hand, many reviewers complained because of the difficulty in accessing the internal parts, especially the hard drive. Less-experienced users were obliged to send the notebook back to the vendor in order to change or swap parts.

They were shipped with many audio and video editing programs, like Adobe Premiere and Sonic Foundry Sound Forge, and also some photo editing applications like Adobe Photoshop Elements.

The battery quality and duration were very good for the time, and they supported also dual-battery operation for an even better battery life, which would replace the modular floppy drive.

They were made for two years, the main difference between those was that the 2001 ones had Intel processors, while the 2002 versions had AMD ones.

Sony made many variations of this model, from budget models with an Intel Celeron and a 1024x768 display to high spec models featuring a 1400x1050 display and Athlon XP.
The Sony VAIO PCG-N505 was a subnotebook released by Sony in 1999. It was very slim for its time, and commanded a VAIO premium price of 3000$, possibly due to it being so slim and the chassis being made entirely out of magnesium. It was a paperweight at 1.2kg which is less than most laptops weigh today. On the side of the display, one could mount "ear" speakers sort of like how you can on the PCG-QR3. The laptop looks very similar to the original PCG-505 series and has one of the most iconic, original laptop designs of all time. It was amazing that a laptop of 1.2kg could compete with performance of much bigger laptops. It was also impressive how Sony could fit so many features and I/O on such a small device.
[[File:PCG-Z505 from side with CD drive.jpg|alt=PCG-Z505 from side with CD drive|thumb|PCG-Z505 from side with CD drive]]
The Sony VAIO PCG-Z505 (sold in the US and Japan) or PCG-Z600 (sold in Europe) was a subnotebook released by Sony in April of 1999. It looks like Sony made a sort of design refresh of the PCG-505/N505 with a slimmer, rectangular battery compared to the round battery found in the previous models. The bezels were also slimmed down compared to the already slim bezels of the N505. Other than that the laptop is pretty similar compared to the N505. Features depended on the model, for example some Z505 models came with a MagicGate Memory Stick slot whereas some such as the Z600TEK had a standard slot. Some Z505 variants were also available with infrared next to the modem jack. All PCG-Z models featured a mini-USB connector on the side next to the Memory Stick reader, this was supposed to be a secondary USB port in case you were using the floppy disk and wanted to use another USB device at the same time.

Sony was really showing off their skills of miniaturization in the 505 line, making laptops so thin and stylish that people would walk into Sony shops just to gaze at them. On the right side, a jog dial was added, which is used by the jog dial utility to launch applications and control various settings. The jog dial (not present on all models) also functions as a power button, by pressing it when the computer is off. The PCG-Z uses a full metal construction, so it feels extremely solid.
==Daily Usage Today==
This laptop is unusable today apart from some offline office tasks like Word, Excel, PowerPoint and some extremely basic websites. Don't expect late 90s-2000s games to run on the laptop, at least at high settings, these are better suited for MS-DOS gaming due to the low power graphics chip, however the ATI chip is more capable than the NeoMagic for gaming. They will not run any OS beyond Windows 7, due to the missing PAE-NX support on the Pentium III, and any OS above Windows XP will run very poorly on this hardware. You will need the external CD drive in order to get an OS onto the laptop easily, this can potentially be very expensive as it only works with the original VAIO CD drive (PCGA-CD5 (meant for PCG-505 but still works), PCGA-CD51, PCGA-CDRW52, PCGA-CDRW51) that uses a PCMCIA interface. Sadly resellers have picked up these drives and are selling them at expensive prices as "Amiga compatible", however they can be found easily from Japan at a much more reasonable price.

==Overview==
The Sony VAIO PCG-FX is a series of mid to high-end notebooks manufactured by Sony between February 2001 and November 2002.

Evolution of the [[PCG-F]], they were some of the best models of the 2001-2002 VAIO lineup.

They were offered in a 14.1" or 15" form factor, both having XGA TFT displays.

They were acclaimed upon their release because of their style, portability and build quality.

The PCG-FX is constructed fully out of plastic.[[File:PCG-FX.png|thumb|Product tour from Sony website of the PCG-FX 2001 lineup]]

On the other hand, many reviewers complained because of the difficulty in accessing the internal parts, especially the hard drive. Less-experienced users were obliged to send the notebook back to the vendor in order to change or swap parts.

They had some of the most powerful CPUs and GPUs of the market, that made them true replacements to a desktop, keeping them in the same category of the predecessor [[PCG-F]]. They were shipped with many audio and video editing programs, like Adobe Premiere and Sonic Foundry Sound Forge, and also some photo editing applications like Adobe Photoshop Elements.

The battery quality and duration were very good for the time, and they supported also dual-battery operation for an even better battery life.

They were made for two years, the main difference between those was that the 2001 ones had Intel processors, while the 2002 versions had AMD ones.

Sony made many some variations of it, changing the CPUs' models and clock speed.
==Detailed Specs==
'''Processor''': Celeron 600MHz, Pentium III 900 MHz, 1GHz (2001 versions); AMD Duron 800MHz, AMD Athlon 4 1GHz, AMD Athlon XP 1400+ 1.4GHz, 1500+ 1.5GHz (2002 versions)

'''MSRP (estimation):''' 1400 to 2200€
==Daily Usage Today==
These devices, due to their specs, cannot handle web browsing or running modern programs today.

Something more can be done with the Windows XP-shipped models, for example basic web browsing, thanks to many modern programs developed for that OS.

They can be used, in all the versions, to write text (they were shipped with Microsoft Office), play old games, or to import, convert, and edit very old photo, video, or audio footages, maybe in order to convert them into a more modern format.
==Overview==

Made mostly of brushed aluminum and plastic, in grey and light blue, they were acclaimed upon their release because of their style, portability and build quality.[[File:PCG-FX.png|thumb|Product tour from Sony website of the PCG-FX 2001 lineup]]

==Daily Usage Today==

Sony was really showing off their skills of miniaturisation in the 505 line, making laptops so thin and stylish that people would walk into Sony shops just to gaze at them. On the right side, a jog dial was added, which is used by the jog dial utility to launch applications and control various settings. The jog dial also functions as a power button, by pressing it when the computer is off. The VAIO uses a full metal construction, so it feels extremely solid.
==Daily Usage Today==
This laptop is unusable today apart from some offline office tasks like Word, Excel, PowerPoint and some extremely basic websites. Don't expect late 90s-2000s games to run on the laptop, at least at high settings, these are better suited for MS-DOS gaming due to the low power graphics chip.
The PCG-XG is obsolete for any modern computing task aside from text editing. Due to its NeoMagic graphics processor, it is also not especially well suited to retro gaming, though there are still plenty of games that will run on it.

The PCG-XG is obsolete for any modern computing task aside from text editing. It may do well in retro gaming, however that largely depends on what exact video chip these laptops use, which is currently not known.

==Overview==
The Sony VAIO PCG-F are a series of high-range notebooks released by Sony between February 1999 and November 2000.

One of the best models of the 1999-2000 lineup, they have a 13", 14.1" (rarer), or a 15" 1024x768 display, with an active-matrix or passive-matrix display.

Made mostly of brushed aluminum, in grey and light blue, they were acclaimed upon their release because of their style and portability.[[File:PCG-F180.png|thumb|PCG-F180 from 1999]]

==Overview==

Made mostly of brushed aluminum and plastic, in grey and light blue, they were acclaimed upon their release because of their style, portability and build quality.[[File:PCG-FX.png|thumb|Product tour from Sony website of the PCG-FX 2001 lineup]]
