Overview
The Sony VAIO PCG-FR (AMD) was a series of mid-to-high-end, desktop replacement laptop computers introduced by Sony in 2003, aimed at power and business users, that needed a powerful, yet not extremely expensive device.

They were highly praised for their excellent keyboard, and their superb Sony Ultrabright displays, they were bright, and the colors were vibrant, however the resolution was lacking. Another criticality of this series of laptops was battery life, which, clocking at around 2h, was below average at the time and even worse on the Intel-powered machines.

They featured a mobile AMD Athlon XP CPU, a downgrade over the Desktop Intel Pentium 4 found on the Intel variants. However, in exchange, you recieved a better GPU, an NVIDIA GeForce 4 420 Go, which is still pretty basic and not intended for gaming.

All FRs had purplish-blue finish. Build quality was excellent, as is VAIO's tradition.

They can be easily differentiated from the Intel variant by the little opening marked "Memory Stick" on the bottom left of the keyboard. AMD variants do not have that, but Intel variants do.

Daily Usage Today
These machines can be used for light modern office tasks, like text editing. Web browsing is doable on a browser like MyPal on XP, or on light Linux. In the right condition and with enough patience, they can even be used to watch YouTube videos on XP-specific modern browsers. Any sort of gaming cannot be done, because of its weak CPU/GPU performance. Typing on these machines is a pleasure, with their excellent keyboard.

Overview
The Sony VAIO Z series was Sony's top-of-the-line laptop range that was originally introduced in 2003. The VPCZ1 was released in 2010, and is the third main refresh of the Z series.

They were built very well, with carbon fiber, aluminium and plastic, and had the iconic cylinder power button design unique to VAIOs. Two different lid styles were offered. The lid on the higher-end (Premium) models have more of a carbon fiber look than the lower-end VPCZ1s (similar to glossy VAIO SVZ models, without being glossy). We do not know if the lower-end models have a carbon fiber lid, but we are sure the Premium ones do. Two color options were offered, black/gray, and silver, silver being slightly rarer today.

The VPCZ1s were one of the first VAIO laptops to feature 1st Gen Intel Core CPUs, which was a significant upgrade over Core 2 Duo CPUs. Its predecessor, the VGN-Z, had an NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS GPU, and people wanted better. That's why Sony included an NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M which is a big upgrade, however it is still a mid-range card (see Daily Usage Today section for more informations). They offered lightning fast Quad-SSDs running in RAID, or a standard SATA HDD for lower-end models, which took the space of the optical drive.

One of the VPCZ1's selling points was the Dynamic Hybrid Graphics System (DHGS), which allowed you to switch from the Intel GMA, to the dedicated GPU, without needing to restart the computer. There was also an automatic system which would select the best GPU depending on your current needs.

The screens on the 1080p VPCZ1 models are excellent. They look stunning and very sharp, and have an excellent color space. The keyboard is also excellent, it has a very good feel to it, and typing on it for hours on end is a pleasing experience. They also included a webcam and an ambient light sensor for automatic brightness adjustments. Speakers are good enough for watching videos or playing games, however headphones are recommended for applications that require a high-quality sound. Battery life was good enough, with around 4h 17min of Wi-Fi surfing in Stamina mode (as tested by NotebookCheck).

A sore spot for the VPCZ1 are the speakers. They are woefully underdeveloped for what was Sony's compact flagship. The problem, however, can be easily solved with headphones, both wired and wireless

Weight: around 1.4 kg

Daily Usage Today
The VPCZ1 series of laptops are still very usable today. Office tasks, web browsing, and even light gaming is very doable on these machines. Watching videos, especially on the models with the 1080p display, is a wonderful experience, if you don't mind the terrible speakers. The GPU is a bit downclocked, but it still can play some light or older games.

The VPCZ1 is a great laptop to buy used today to get into the VAIO madness, or simply to have a good, powerful enough device with a stunning design you can carry with you every day. These devices are worth quite a lot now, you can expect to pay around +350€ for a Premium model, but sometimes, cheaper ones pop up.
Overview
The Sony VAIO PCG-QR3 was a mid-range, multimedia-oriented and design-centric laptop computer sold by Sony only in Japan around 2001.

The main peculiarity of the QR3 are the two surprisingly high quality detachable speakers placed at the left and right of the screen.
The QR3, like the QR1, was designed to stand out when compared to any other laptop at the time. The build is entirely plastic, and it's also harder to work on than most laptops of its time, since to access any component that isn't the modem card, you need to remove the whole bottom of the machine. All QR3s were white, with a purple-greyish palmrest and screen bezel. The keys on the very clicky keyboard are shaped to resemble the keys on a typewriter, and the whole laptop generally oozes with "Y2k" industral design touches.

The QR3 was powered by a Mobile Intel Celeron clocked at 750MHz. It shipped with 128MB of RAM and either a 20, 30 or 40GB IDE HDD, all made by Hitachi.

The QR3 is equipped with a CD-RW/DVD-ROM optical drive, a Memory Stick slot with MagicGate compatibility and two PCMCIA Type II slot. I/O includes two USB ports, an i.Link S400 (IEEE 1394/Apple FireWire 400 4-pin) port, two 3.5mm jacks (Audio-IN and Audio-OUT), an Ethernet port, a modem port and VGA-Out.

Interaction with Windows XP Home Edition happens through either the non-multitouch trackpad or although in a much more limited way, via the Jog Dial placed near the hinge on the right side.

Among the bundled software is possible to find classic Sony programs like SonicStage, on top of some So-Net (Sony's Japan-only ISP service) promotional material.
Problems
The QR Series, including the QR3, suffer from a power issue. The power IC chip, named "ADP3421" (can vary), tends to die after being used years after years.

Symptoms of this problem are:

*no power at all
*power and other LEDs lighting up for a few seconds

The solution for this problem is currently being checked by the VAIO Library team, and should be as simple as replacing that chip with a replacement from AliExpress.

Daily Usage Today
Today the QR3, almost like back in the day, is just a novelty item. It lacks any kind of usage, being woefully underpowered for tasks like retro gaming or video editing, the only thing it can do properly being text editing and other office tasks, with its wonderful keyboard.

It is only a collector's item, reason why prices outside Japan can be very steep, if you can find one for sale at all. With enough patience it's still possible to find some good deals in Japan.
It is only a collector's item, reason why prices outside Japan can be very steep, if you can find one for sale at all. With enough patience it's still possible to find some good deals in Japan.

They had a super nice blue finish, that looks better in person than in pictures. Build quality was excellent, as is VAIO's tradition.

They can be easily differentiated from the Intel variant by the little opening marked "Memory Stick" on the bottom left of the keyboard. AMD variants do not have that, but Intel variants do.

These machines can be used for light modern office tasks, like text editing. Web browsing is doable on a browser like MyPal on XP, or on light Linux. In the right condition and with enough patience, they can even be used to watch YouTube videos on XP-specific modern browsers. Any sort of gaming cannot be done. Typing on these machines is a pleasure, with their excellent keyboard.
Overview
The VAIO PCG-X505 was a high-end, thin and light, "ultraportable" laptop computer released by Sony worldwide in 2004 (with a Japan-only release in 2003).

It was highly praised for its cutting-edge thin design, its very low weight (only 860g - 1.85lb, achieved by using carbon fiber for the lid) and for the good performance that it still managed to achieve in spite of the very compact dimensions. It featured an Intel Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) "Dothan" Pentium M clocked at 1.1GHz and Intel 855GME Graphics with 64MB of VRAM.

The original MSRP for its US release was 2999.99USD from the SonyStyle.com website. It shipped with Windows XP Professional.

Original Sony accessories for the laptop included a semi-rigid carrying case, a DVD-RW external unit powered by a special connector that slots inside the i.Link S400 port and a power outlet near said port and a PCMCIA wireless card

MSRP: 2999.99USD (US)

Daily usage today
While extremely advanced for its time back in 2004, the X505 is, nowadays, almost completely useless. Its processor is, when compared to other laptops of its time, slower, the graphics are weaker, and the RAM is not upgradeable (even though it is enough for light usage like text editing or even importing videos from the i.Link S400 port). The little, 1.8" HDD will also not help things out (it uses the same compact IDE interface as Apple's iPods, so spares are easy and cheap to find, as well as flash modding solutions). The tiny keyboard and awkward "trackpoint" mouse interface will not add anything positive to the overall user experience

Overall, the PCG-X505 can only be recommended as a collectors item, and a rather expensive one as well

Overview
The Sony VAIO PCG-QR3 was a midrange, multimedia-oriented and design-centric laptop computer sold by Sony only in Japan around 2001.

The main peculiarity of the QR3 are the two surprisingly high quality detachable speakers placed at the left and right of the screen.
Design
The QR3, like the QR1, was designed to stand out when compared to any other laptop at the time. The build is entirely plastic and, compared to other all-plastic VAIOs of around that same period, it feels somewhat cheaper. It's also harder to work on than most laptops of its time, since to access any component that isn't the modem card you're required to disassembly the whole bottom of the machine.

All QR3s were white, with a purple-greyish palmrest and screen bezel. The keys on the very clicky keyboard are shaped to resemble the keys on a typewriter, and the whole laptop generally oozes with "Y2k" industral design touches.

Specifications
The QR3 was powered by a Mobile Intel Celeron clocked at 750MHz. It shipped with 128MB of RAM and either a 20, 30 or 40GB IDE HDD, all made by Hitachi.

The Laptop is equipped with a CD-RW/DVD-ROM optical drive, a Memory Stick slot with MagicGate compatibility and two PCMCIA Type II slot.

The QR3 today
Today the QR3, almost like back in the day, is just a novelty item. It lacks any kind of usage, being woefully underpowered for tasks like retro gaming or video editing and unusable for text editing (unless you are comfortable with the Japanese keyboard, of course). It is only a collector's item, reason why prices outside Japan can be very steep. With enough patience it's still possible to find some good deals in Japan though auctions.

Below is a list of all the Sony VAIO recovery discs that can be found on the internet.

Some are uploaded by us, some aren't, and so we offer no liability, please use at your own risk, not that there is one anyway.

Recovery discs have multiple names : Recovery Discs, Recovery Disks, Recovery Media, Recovery Media CD, Recovery DVD, Recovery CD.

<big>Last list update : 07/05/2022</big>

Compatibility Problems
Some of these recovery discs only work on the model they are intended for (model example : VPCZ11C7E), and not on the entire series (series example : VPCZ1). In some cases it's even worse, they only work on the unit they were created with.

This creates a problem. Even though those discs would perfectly work on the machine you are trying to install them on, they are locked from installing. The VAIO Libary is currently working on a fix for this problem, make recovery discs work on the entire series they are intended for.

List of Available Models
<big>We also have a list of recovery discs uploaded on our servers for faster downloads ! Please see "List of Available Models - VAIO Library Servers" section below.</big>

These downloads are all on the Internet Archive.

We do not make a difference between languages, you can always change the language after the install. When multiple recovery discs are available for one model, we list all of them.

System Recovery is also called Disc 1, and Application Recovery is Disc 2.

Overview
The Sony VAIO PCG-QR3 was a mid-low end, multimedia-oriented and design-centric laptop computer sold by Sony only in Japan around 2001.

The QR3 today
Today the QR3, almost like back in the day, is just a novelty item. It lacks any kind of usage, being woefully underpowered for tasks like gaming or video editing and absolutely unusable for text editing (unless you are comfortable with the Japanese keyboard, of course). It is only a collector's item, reason why prices outside Japan can be very steep. With enough patience it's still possible to find some good deals in Japan though auctions.
Overview
The Sony VAIO PCG-FR (Intel) was a series of high-end, desktop replacement laptop computers introduced by Sony in 2003, aimed at power and business users, that needed a powerful, yet not extremely expensive device.

They were highly praised for their excellent keyboard, and their superb Sony Ultrabright displays, they were bright, and the colors were vibrant, however the resolution was lacking. Another criticality of this series of laptops was battery life, which, clocking at around 1.5h, was below average at the time. It modeslty improved on the less powerful AMD-powered variants, but it was still abysmal (around 2h)

They featured Desktop Intel Pentium 4 CPUs (lower-end models featured Mobile and Desktop Celerons), and they were highly criticized for their poor graphics performance, which even then, wasn't able to run games properly.

They had a super nice blue finish, that looks better in person than in pictures. Build quality was excellent, as is VAIO's tradition.

They can be easily differentiated from the AMD variant by the little silver line on the bottom left of the keyboard. AMD variants do not have that.

They had a super nice blue finish, that looks better in person than in pictures. Build quality was excellent, as is VAIO's tradition.

They can be easily differentiated from the Intel variant by the little silver line on the bottom left of the keyboard. AMD variants do not have that, but Intel variants do.

The Sony VAIO VGN-P was a seriers of ultraportable subnotebook laptops released by Sony in early 2009.

They were marketed as "lifestyle PCs", with big focus put on connectivity, thanks to the intergation on some models of GPS and wireless broadband 3G connectivity. All P-series came pre-installed with an XBM-like Linux desktop environment that allowed the user to power on the laptop and go online and access multimedia files in less than 30 seconds"

Performace was underwhelming even back in the day. This makes the P-series today not much more than a fun novelty and a collectors' item

Prices for the tiny laptops were pretty steep, with base models hovering around 800USD and fully-loaded ones going for almost 1900USD MSRP. This has made them pretty rare and so very sought-after. Prices for used examples are usually around 200-250€, but it's possible to find some good deals with enough patience

Overview
The VAIO PCG-X505 was a high-end, thin and light, "ultraportable" laptop computer released by Sony worldwide in 2004 (with a Japan-only release in 2003).

Highly praised for its cutting-edge thin design, for its very low weight (only 860g - 1.85lb, achieved by using carbon fiber for the lid) and for the good performance that it still managed to achieve in spite of the very compact dimensions, it featured an Intel "Ultra Low Voltage" (ULV for short), "Dothan" Pentium M clocked at 1.1GHz and Intel 855GME Graphics with 64MB of VRAM.

The original MSRP for its US release was 2999.99USD from the SonyStyle.com website. It shipped with Windows XP Professional.
