The Sony VAIO VGN-AW Series is a range of 18.4" mid to very high-end desktop replacement laptops released by Sony in 2008. Announced alongside with the [[VGC-RT]] desktop, the series is intended for premium media consumption and home use, while the top-spec models are designed for media professionals as their portable workstation.

The AW Series was offered with a choice of Penryn Intel Core 2 Duos, as well as a NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS for the lower-end models, and a 9600M GT for the higher-end ones. They also have support for up to 8GB of DDR2 RAM, with some models shipping with a single 4GB DDR2 module and even 8GB in the highest spec models which were pricey and rare at the time.

Higher-end models also had special features that lower-end models didn't have, like a CF reader (one of the only laptops ever released to feature one), Blu-ray burner (lower-end models only had a Blu-ray reader), TV tuner, fingerprint sensor, Windows Vista/7 Ultimate, and SSD storage. Top-spec AWs included a Dual-SSD setup running in RAID 0 as well as an extra hard drive.

In Japan and the US, the difference between the top-spec models and lower-end ones is less clear, as you can find "Titanium Gray" models with hardware usually found only in the black and "Premium Piano Black" models, like the 9600M GT, CCFL 1080p displays, and CF reader. However, the top spec RGB LED display was exclusive to the premium model. Also only in Japan, marketing referred the top-spec Premium Black models as "Photo Edition" and gray models as "Video Edition".

== Daily Usage Today==
The AW is still very usable today for modern tasks like text editing, media consumption (which is still better than on most non-OLED laptops from today, only on 1080p LED models), and light gaming (9600M GT). Lower-end models are still usable, but you won't have an experience quite as good as you would have on higher-end ones. YouTube 1080p60 playback is fine on the 9600M GT models, however, on the 9300M GS, even 720p stutters. The latest video drivers from NVIDIA will not work without modifying the INF file, as Sony has changed the hardware ID to make it not install. Once modified and installed, it does work perfectly, including brightness adjustment. However, due to the GPU having no Vulkan support and only supporting up to DX10, many modern games will not run on the laptop, and if they do they will run quite badly, so you are better off playing older or light games on this laptop. The VGN-AW can also be upgraded to a quad core CPU, with [[VGN-AW Quad Core Mod|2 simple modifications]].

Top-end AWs can be very pricey, popping up on eBay rarely, and costing upwards of $1000 US. Lower-end models can be found for significantly cheaper, but are still pretty rare.

One very common issue is the magnesium power cable ring breaking off due to stress and also the DC jack breaking around where it connects to the motherboard. The DC jack can be acquired for cheap while the power jack ring is quite difficult and expensive to get. In order to fix the broken power jack, you will either have to glue the broken magnesium piece back together using superglue or replace the whole palmrest which can get expensive. It is recommended to use superglue, as it is cheap and bonds very well with the magnesium. If you are careful, you can get a fix that looks just as good as if you replace the palmrest. If you have a top model with the rubber palmrest, it also has a tendency to unglue itself from the palmrest, this can be simply glued back in though. Overall, parts availability is rare and expensive, especially if looking for exterior pieces or upgrades such as the dual hard drive cable or if it's for a high end or top model, however batteries (VGP-BPS13) are cheap (approx $25 US on eBay) as they were used in many other VAIO models.

All VAIOs equipped with a NVIDIA 8000 series GPU suffer from a very unfortunate issue, called Bumpgate. This is caused by the tiny bumps connecting the GPU die to the substrate breaking due to a faulty underfill material used by NVIDIA during that time. This is also the same issue that affects every other laptop equipped with these chips, as well as the fat PS3 consoles. Some ATI/AMD GPU/chipset equipped VAIOs (such as the VPCEE) also suffer from GPU failures, although these are less common.

There are 2 ways to fix this issue; the most ideal and longest lasting repair being a chip replacement, as the chip is the problem. However, if you do not get a fixed revision of the chip, there is a possibility of the failure occurring again, and you might not want to spend the money or have the expertise to remove and replace the GPU.

However, an alternate fix is to reflow/reball the chip (this guide will only cover the reflow process). Reflowing is when the chip is heated up to "reflow" or remelt the solder balls, ensuring a solid connection with the motherboard. Consequently, this heating up also shifts the bumps on the die back into position, allowing the GPU to work again. "Reballing" will do the same thing, although instead of heating up the solder balls, you are removing the chip from the motherboard, cleaning it and applying new solder balls to it, then reinstalling the chip back on. This fix is only temporary, and you shouldn't expect the laptop to last more than 1 or 2 months before requiring another reflow and eventually a chip replacement.

# Remove all tape/insulating material located around or near the GPU. It can be left on, however when the GPU is reflowed the material may melt or curl up.
# (if you have it) Cut out a square the size of the GPU on the aluminum foil, or apply kapton tape around the GPU to protect the other components.
# Apply flux around the edges of the chip
# Set the corners of the motherboard on top of something, so that there is air on the top and bottom of the board
# Turn on your heat gun and set it to 400C
# Apply heat to the GPU for about 2-3 minutes, making sure to move the heat gun around the GPU to avoid putting too much heat in 1 location.
# Once you have done that, wait for the motherboard to cool down, then reassemble and test.
# If the laptop works, you are done! Make sure to follow the tips below to prolong the life of your laptop. If not, try reheating for a couple more minutes, otherwise if it still doesn't work, your chip is fried and will require a replacement.

* Make sure to apply a good quality thermal paste to the laptop, PTM7950 is a very good option as it completely eliminates pump-out on laptops. It is also a cheap option if you order from sites such as AliExpress. You want a thermal paste that is very viscous to prevent pump out, such as Gelid GC-Extreme.
* Slightly bend the screw points on the heatsink up slightly, this puts more pressure on the chips enabling better contact.
* Clean the cooling system of your laptop regularly, at least once a year so that it stays running cool.
* If there is no copper touching the GPU, consider getting a copper shim, this will conduct heat much better than the non-copper heatsink.
