When installing Windows 7/8.1, you will need to keep in mind that most modern software is no longer supported, but some smaller projects (such as r3dfox browser, Pale Moon browser, etc) are still actively maintained. Overall, Linux would be the best choice as it supports most modern software and will make the laptop run at good speeds.
