Overview

2D variant of VPCF2 in Black

The Sony VAIO VPCF2 is a range of mid to high-end multimedia laptops released by Sony in 2011. Replacing the VPCF1, they maintained the same 16.4" size as the VPCF1, however introduced the second generation Intel Core processors. The laptops were designed for media consumption, and with the rare 3D display also served as the ideal laptop for watching 3D movies.

VPCF2 in Premium Black (3D version)

The VPCF2 was quite highly specced even when standard, with the majority featuring a 1920x1080 LED display, Blu-Ray drive and backlit keyboard standard, however when maxed out, the VPCF2 was one of the most powerful VAIOs built, featuring a 4 core 8 thread i7-2670QM, 8GB of 1333MHz RAM and a NVIDIA GT 540M. Top models also came equipped with an excellent 1920x1080 3D display that runs up to 120Hz, and a matte finish, which has amazing colours and brightness. The screen is also extremely smooth in the 120Hz mode. The VPCF2 also came with a backlit keyboard, that offers a good typing experience. Low spec models with the i3 and 1600x900 display are actually quite rare to find.

The VPCF2 came in 2 distinct configurations, the 3D and 2D variants, which are easy to tell apart.

  • 3D variant: Glossy black finish on lid and palmrest, 3D button in between Assist and VAIO buttons
  • 2D variant: Matte black or silver finish on lid and palmrest, WEB button instead of 3D button

The VPCF2 3D variant was compatible with NVIDIA 3D vision, and unlike other 3D laptops of the time which required the NVIDIA 3D Vision glasses, these were compatible with regular Sony BRAVIA glasses, making purchasing them these days incredibly cheap. The VPCF2 was the last VAIO to offer a TV tuner, however if you did not spec this option the slot for one was not soldered in. This was also the last VAIO to feature a FireWire/i-Link port, as later ones omitted it.

Daily Usage Today

Due to the powerful hardware used in the laptop at the time, this machine is still very usable for most tasks and some light gaming. Older games will run with ease on this laptop, especially with the GT 540M. The screen is also excellent, especially if you get the 3D version, making for a great laptop to watch movies on and use. Windows 10 and 11 will run very smoothly on this laptop, especially if paired with at least 8GB RAM and a SSD.
